Upcoming Star Wars Novel May Tease a Meeting Between Cal Kestis and Luke Skywalker

A newly updated Star Wars reference book reveals that Luke Skywalker, at some point after the original trilogy, became aware of Cal Kestis, the protagonist of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and his master. This could hint at a potential future encounter between the two Jedi in upcoming shows, animated series, games, or other Star Wars media.

On May 12, Lucasfilm and Disney released Star Wars: The Secrets of the Jedi: The Chronicles of Luke Skywalker, an updated edition of a Jedi reference book from 2019. This new version includes fresh insights and connections to recent shows and games. A keen-eyed fan discovered a newly expanded journal entry from Luke Skywalker, dated 34 ABY (around the time of The Last Jedi), where the iconic hero mentions Kestis surviving Order 66.

“A small handful of Jedi managed to escape execution, such as Master Jaro Tapal’s Padawan Cal Kestis…”

What does this imply? At the very least, it indicates that Luke was aware of Kestis’s survival after Order 66. However, there’s more to unpack here. It’s intriguing that Luke not only knows Kestis survived but also that his master did not, and that he recognizes Tapal’s name. This suggests that during his years of studying the Jedi Order and collaborating with the Rebellion and later the Resistance, Luke may have learned about Kestis and Tapal. If that’s the case, it could simply be a fun Easter egg without deeper significance.

But if we consider the possibility of more, it raises the question of whether Luke encounters Kestis after the events of Return of the Jedi (after Yoda tells him he’s the last of the Jedi). By then, Kestis would be about a decade older and a more seasoned Force user. Perhaps Kestis even assists Luke in establishing the small Jedi academy glimpsed in the Sequel Trilogy. This scenario would complicate Yoda’s statement in Return of the Jedi, where he refers to Luke as the last of the Jedi, although characters like Ahsoka and Ezra somewhat challenge that notion depending on interpretation.

It’s less likely that Luke would meet Kestis before 4 ABY, as that would place their encounter during the Original Trilogy, which doesn’t quite align with Luke’s character and motivations. Or maybe he stumbled upon a holotape of Cal Kestis and his awesome color-changing lightsaber and felt a twinge of jealousy? In the expansive universe of Star Wars, anything is possible.
