A Guide to Finding Lithium in Subnautica 2

Finding lithium in Subnautica 2 is a tougher task compared to hunting down titanium, lead, or gold. This elusive metal is primarily located in just one spot early in the game. Fortunately, you won’t need a lot of it for your initial crafting needs.

Gathering lithium can be a bit risky, as it requires diving into a massive mouth and snatching some before it shuts—definitely a nerve-wracking experience! If you’re ready to take on this challenge, here’s how to find lithium.

Your only source of lithium at the start is The Great Jaw. Before you dive in, make sure you’re prepared with a few essentials:

Bringing along some Air Bladders for extra oxygen is a smart move, along with crafting Basic Fins and the Wakemaker mobility gadget to help you swim quickly. To reach The Great Jaw:

Don’t forget to explore the building nearby to snag the High Capacity Dive Tank recipe if you haven’t already. Then, head southeast a short distance to find The Great Jaw—a massive pod-like mouth with a tonsil covered in purple strands at its center. There are plenty of Oxygen Tunics around the jaw, so take advantage of them to refill your O2, especially since it will drop while you’re inside.

The lithium you’re after is located within the tonsil structure, but you’ll need to use the Sonic Resonator to break it open. Be quick, though—the jaw will start to close as soon as you disturb the purple strands, so you’ll need to smash the lithium, grab some, and make a hasty exit. If you haven’t already, consider picking up the dash upgrade from the Biomod terminal in the Welcome Center ruin south of the Life Pod to help with your escape.

Once you unlock the Heat Tolerance adaptation, allowing you to explore the volcanic vent zone, you can find plenty of lithium in the hot caves beneath the Tadpole Pens, reducing the need to revisit The Great Jaw. Luckily, early on, you won’t need much lithium for crafting; it’s mainly used to create Plasteel Ingots in the Processor, and you only need one to upgrade your diving tank.
