Tips for Expanding Your Inventory in Subnautica 2

You start your adventure in Subnautica 2 with just 20 inventory slots and five hotbar spaces, which you’ll fill up in no time. Soon enough, you’ll be managing storage chests and searching for every available nook to stash your gear. So, figuring out how to boost your inventory size should be one of your first goals.

The good news is that you can expand both your inventory and hotbar space, though it requires some effort. While you’re at it, consider building the Wakemaker and upgrading your O2 supplies to make your journey smoother.

To increase your inventory space, interact with the terminal next to Biobeds found in colony outposts. Whenever you spot a blue lightstick, it’s worth checking out the area, as it often leads to a habitat with a Biobed, a scannable tool, or other useful items. The black boxes you’re tasked with recovering by NOA also guide you to various locations with Biobeds.

Biobeds are primarily used to reset your spawn point (though they are closed beds), so it’s easy to miss that the computer terminal connected to them grants a permanent upgrade the first time you use it. These upgrades come in the form of Endurance and Dexterity, which enhance your inventory and hotbar space, respectively.

Here are some early inventory upgrade locations I’ve discovered:

Upgrade Type

Location

Endurance

Inside Chap’s base in a small cave roughly 220 meters southeast and 40m deep from the Lifepod, with the entrance at the base of a stone pillar.

Endurance

Anita’s Garden outpost, 170 meters northeast and 38 meters deep from the Lifepod. Use the current 110m northeast of the Life Pod to enter the cave, then travel northeast, following the lights on sticks through some small cave tunnels.

Dexterity

Inside a small outpost with green slime on the ground, about 200 meters north of the Lifepod, 86m deep.

Endurance

There’s a habitat built into a cliff wall close to a ruined colony building, 255 meters southwest of the Lifepod, 86m deep.

For managing your inventory effectively, my top tip is to travel light (you really only need a spare battery, a snack, and a drink) and carry a Portable Locker when you’re mining or gathering materials.

You can store items in these lockers and transport them back to your base. There’s even one located in the cave directly beneath the Lifepod, which seems to respawn periodically, allowing for multiple uses.

As you progress, there’s also a haulage module for your Tadpole vehicle, which I suspect will let you store items there, although I haven’t fully unlocked that feature yet.
