Peter Jackson Reveals Potential for Lord of the Rings Films Inspired by the Silmarillion

Director Peter Jackson has dedicated years to bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary fantasy works, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, to life on the big screen. His last journey into Middle-earth, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, was thought to be his final chapter in this epic saga. Although he is involved as a producer in Andy Serkis’ upcoming project, The Hunt for Gollum, Jackson recently hinted at a new The Lord of the Rings film based on an untapped Tolkien story during an interview.

In his conversation, Jackson referenced Christopher Tolkien, J.R.R.’s son, who played a crucial role in editing and publishing works like The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, while also safeguarding his father’s legacy. Jackson expressed that there is “a lot more Tolkien writing that would actually make great movies.”

However, fans hoping for more Tolkien adaptations faced disappointment, as the Tolkien estate, under Christopher’s stewardship, was critical of Jackson’s previous films. Christopher once remarked that Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy “eviscerated the book by making it an action movie for young people aged 15 to 25,” and he suggested that The Hobbit followed a similar path.

Given this history, it was no shock when Jackson announced that no further The Lord of the Rings films would be made until the Tolkien estate reconsidered their stance on the rights to other works.

With Christopher Tolkien’s passing in 2020, it seemed likely that the estate would reassess their previous decisions. Now, Jackson reveals that discussions are underway.

“The next generation [of the Tolkien estate] are much more open to talking,” he shared. “So it’s a combination of Warners and us who have been talking to the younger members about the possibility of actually licensing the rights of some of the other books. It would be nice to get away from some of the appendices and get something meatier.”

This news is thrilling for fans eager to see more of Tolkien’s rich narratives on screen, marking a hopeful shift in the landscape of adaptations. Many have long wished for a cinematic take on The Silmarillion, which is set long before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Will this dream finally come to fruition? Only time will tell.
