Subnautica 2 Unveils an Extensive First Roadmap

Subnautica 2 has made a significant impact since its launch and is set to keep the momentum going. Recently, Unknown Worlds unveiled the first official roadmap for Subnautica 2, promising a wealth of updates for this underwater survival adventure, including some highly sought-after quality-of-life improvements. It may be early to say “finally,” but yes, a sprint button is on the way!

After a rocky period between Unknown Worlds and its former publisher, Subnautica 2 launched on May 14 in early access for Windows PC and Xbox Series X, quickly becoming one of the standout titles of 2026. It sold over a million copies within the first hour, and that number more than doubled by the end of its first day. Clearly, players were eager to dive into the depths.

The roadmap for Subnautica 2 is divided into three phases: the first phase will focus on quality-of-life enhancements, the second will broaden cooperative gameplay features, and the third will introduce “major” updates. Throughout this process, Unknown Worlds will also roll out minor patches to optimize gameplay and fix bugs.

The initial update, “EA 1.1,” will significantly boost the game’s storage capacity and biomod options, increasing the number of biomod slots available. Currently, the biomod system in Subnautica 2 is somewhat limited, so this expansion is a welcome change. The highlight of this update is the introduction of a sprint feature, allowing players to reach the surface without running out of oxygen just a few feet away.

The subsequent update, “EA 1.2,” will enhance the base-building tools and introduce additional HUD signals. For multiplayer enthusiasts, expect the addition of voice chat, emotes, and the ability to revive teammates, along with more customization options.

Looking beyond these updates, Unknown Worlds has plans to introduce a plethora of new content: fresh biomes, creatures, resources, tools, a new vehicle, and an entirely new story chapter. While specific dates for these updates haven’t been shared, the developers mentioned in an earlier interview that the early access phase is expected to last around two years.

Nothing like facing countless challenges to remind you of the essence of being human.
