Sonic 4 Brings Back One of the Hedgehog’s Most Notorious Rivals

Filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has officially wrapped up, and a recent post confirmed that a key villain from the series will play a significant role in the upcoming movie.

Spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic Heroes ahead!

In the post-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic faces off against Metal Sonic and a squad of robotic clones, only to be rescued by Amy Rose. This cliffhanger left fans curious about how the next installment would build on this character’s introduction. Director Jeff Fowler took to social media on May 15 to announce that filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has concluded, sharing a photo of himself alongside a model of Metal Sonic.

If you were concerned that Metal Sonic would be sidelined after that exciting post-credit moment, rest assured. Fowler previously mentioned that they don’t introduce characters lightly, emphasizing that they aim to bring something fresh and engaging to the narrative.

While the voice actor for Metal Sonic remains a mystery, Kristen Bell has been confirmed to voice Amy. I’m thrilled to hear that Metal Sonic will return in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as he’s one of my favorite antagonists in the series.

Metal Sonic first made his debut in Sonic CD back in 1993, created by Dr. Eggman to capture Amy, which set off the game’s time-traveling adventure. Since then, he has evolved into a more autonomous villain, serving as the final boss in Sonic Heroes, where he transforms into Neo Metal Sonic to challenge players. I have a lot of nostalgia for that game, and I would love to see Neo Metal Sonic as the climactic showdown in the next film.

It remains to be seen whether Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will draw more from Sonic CD or Sonic Heroes, as both storylines could work with Metal Sonic as a central figure. We’ll have to wait about ten months to find out, as Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to hit theaters on March 19, 2027.
