Sony defends its AI Camera Assistant’s performance
After generating some buzz for a post showcasing its AI Camera Assistant on the Xperia 1 XIII, Sony is working to clarify how this feature operates. The company emphasizes that it doesn’t alter photos but rather offers suggestions based on factors like lighting, depth, and subject matter. When you point the camera at a scene, it provides four options for adjusting exposure, color, and background blur.
In its promotional video, Sony mentions that the AI Camera Assistant will recommend “the most photogenic angle.” However, the video primarily demonstrates it suggesting a zoom-in, which doesn’t quite equate to recommending a specific camera angle.
The examples shared by Sony, while an improvement over earlier ones, still leave much to be desired. They’re not as washed out as the sandwich photo or as overexposed as the portrait in the meadow, but each suggestion in the grid has significant flaws and appears worse than the original images. The first suggestion is overly saturated, the second is flat and over-processed, the third makes the food look artificially placed, and the contrast in the fourth is excessively high.
For those using the Xperia 1 XIII, it might be best to disregard the AI Camera Assistant’s suggestions for the time being.
