PlayStation Plus Prices Set to Rise for Certain Users

Sony has announced an upcoming price hike for PlayStation Plus subscriptions, as revealed in a tweet on Monday. Starting Wednesday, in “select regions,” the cost for PlayStation Plus Essential will increase by $1 to $10.99 for a one-month subscription and by $3 to $27.99 for a three-month subscription. The specific “select regions” were not detailed in the announcement, and it remains unclear if the higher tiers of PlayStation Plus will also see price adjustments.

On a positive note, current subscribers will not be impacted by the price increase, except for those in Turkey and India. If you’re already subscribed, your rate will only change if your existing subscription lapses or is modified.

Sony has attributed this price adjustment to “ongoing market conditions,” a phrase reminiscent of their earlier announcement regarding the price increases for PlayStation 5 consoles, which they linked to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of global marketing for Sony Interactive Entertainment, previously stated, “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”

PlayStation Plus Essential is the most basic and affordable tier of the subscription service, offering online multiplayer access, monthly free games, and additional benefits. The free games for May include EA Sports FC 26, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, and Nine Sols.

Interestingly, this price increase comes just a month after Xbox reduced the prices of several Xbox Game Pass tiers. Notably, a Game Pass Ultimate monthly subscription now costs $22.99, down from $29.99. Earlier in May, Xbox also introduced a more affordable “starter edition” of Game Pass as part of its collaboration with Discord.

Here’s what we know, what we think we know, and what we don’t.
