Indie Game Into The Unwell Cancels Early Access Plans with a Musical Twist

One of the unexpected highlights from last year’s Summer Game Fest is facing a delay. Lego Arcanine looks fantastic, and Cyclops has never been more stylish in Marvel Cosmic Invasion. Here’s the latest roundup for May 18, 2026, where I’m excited about all the custom difficulty settings and game modes in Mina the Hollower, including one that literally turns the floor into lava. Meanwhile, I’m tempted to jump back into The Witcher 3 after discovering its clever method for preventing players from exploiting a cowhide-farming glitch.

Into the Unwell made waves during last year’s showcase with its vintage cartoon art style reminiscent of Cuphead, quirky humor, and 3D roguelite gameplay. “The coolest announcement imo,” one YouTube comment reads. This “rubber hose fueled fever dream” was initially set to hit Steam in Early Access in 2026, but indie team She Was Such A Good Horse has now changed those plans. They “unannounced” the game’s launch with a musical reveal.

Early Access Update! We’ve scrapped our EA plans and are going straight to 1.0!

This means Into the Unwell is now slated for a 2027 release.

“They’re giving us more funding, so we’re basically finishing the whole game now,” a team member shared during the musical announcement. The studio is backed by Coffee Stain, known for Goat Simulator, and they noted that positive feedback from early testing played a role in this decision. This shift may also reflect evolving attitudes toward Early Access.

Unless you’re Subnautica 2, many developers are finding that players treat Early Access like a full launch and evaluate the game accordingly. It’s better to present the best version of your game from the start rather than risk disappointing players and struggling to recover. “Aaaahhhhh we wanted to play Into The Unwell before GTA 6666666!!!!!” lamented one fan. “ajasdkjfaksdfj (MAYBE we can… maybe GTA 6 releases in 2029…)”

Mp1st revealed an in-development cutscene from a game that Aspyr was working on before it was reportedly rebooted by Saber Interactive. The scene features dialogue and staging for an early interaction with Captain Carth Onasi and Trask Ulgo, hinting at a voiced protagonist—a shift from the original game where they were silent. This Aspyr version was also rumored to have combat mechanics similar to those in Final Fantasy VII Remake, all of which was likely scrapped in the reboot.

I haven’t been too impressed with the season 1 skins, even though I’m eager to find something to spend money on in my favorite game of the year so far. However, some leaked concept art for season 2 looks much more promising.

The Thing and Cyclops are both joining last year’s retro arcade brawler today. This first DLC is priced at $4, with a second content update expected in the fall. The game is currently accessible through a paid Game Pass subscription. Most importantly, Cyclops is rocking his stylish jacket.

Technical director Andy Fong shared that the team is excited to adapt Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch. “We’re big fans and believe these games can shine again on the Switch, delighting even more players,” he said, reflecting on the studio’s work bringing L.A. Noire to the console back in 2017.
