Get ready for a fresh take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — here’s a sneak peek!
They’re still mutants, they’re still ninjas, and they’re still turtles, but this time, they’ve traded in their teenage years for a younger, more playful vibe.
Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles is the latest animated adventure featuring Leo, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey, focusing on their formative years as ninjas-in-training before they became the heroes we know. The series is set to launch on July 24 on the Nick Jr. YouTube channel, featuring 30 episodes, each lasting four minutes.
In celebration of World Turtle Day on May 23, an outlet has shared an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming series, showcasing the first images and a video that introduces the cutest rendition of the Heroes in a Half-Shell yet.
The new logo emphasizes the “Teeny” aspect of the title, sporting a bright, chalky design that’s perfect for kids.
The stills appear to depict a single adventure where the Teeny Turtles take on a giant, sentient pizza. This could be the villain Pizza Face, reminiscent of his appearance in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which marked Nickelodeon’s first foray with the characters after acquiring the rights in 2009. The 2012 series shares a visual style that aligns closely with these new designs, while also paying homage to earlier versions, such as the letters on their belt buckles, reminiscent of the original 1987 series.
The video clip features the Turtles introducing themselves before they comically tumble through a manhole cover, giving a taste of their voice acting and animation style.
While the Turtles are younger and aimed at a preschool audience, there are some notable design changes. Their weapons have a safer, more colorful, jelly-like look, and Leo wields a single sword instead of two. For those concerned about their footwear, it’s worth noting that various iterations of the Turtles have sported similar sandals, even in the darker Last Ronin series.
Despite the show’s younger target demographic, the video is packed with nods to past versions of the franchise. For instance, Raph sports a snaggletooth reminiscent of his look in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Turtles chanting “Go Ninja Turtles, Go!” echoes the classic “Ninja Rap” refrain. The clip even features a homage to the original cartoon’s theme song, with the Turtles falling through the air, culminating in Leo slicing the frame in half.
These thoughtful references are sure to delight long-time TMNT fans, as is Nickelodeon’s effort to engage kids with the Ninja Turtles from an early age, rather than letting them gravitate solely towards Spidey and his Amazing Friends.
