Hasbro Cancels Dungeons & Dragons Game from Star Wars Jedi Director Just a Year After Announcement

Nearly a year after its announcement, the single-player action-adventure game set in the tabletop universe, developed by Giant Skull—a studio established by Stig Asmussen, known for his work on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order—has been canceled.

Reports indicate that Hasbro recently terminated its publishing agreement with Giant Skull. Earlier this year, the company also scrapped a previously announced Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure title that was in the works at the studio.

A representative from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro stated, “We assess concepts at every stage of development. While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship.” Despite the cancellation, Hasbro is still open to pitches from Giant Skull.

Asmussen, who previously served as game director at Respawn for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel, Jedi: Survivor, has a rich history in the industry, having directed God of War III and worked as art director on God of War II at Sony Santa Monica.

In a conversation with Bloomberg, Asmussen expressed his enjoyment in collaborating with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, confirming that Giant Skull is exploring new publishing opportunities with them and other companies, stating, “Things are good at Giant Skull.”

Wizards of the Coast has been ramping up its investment in video games in recent years. In 2024, Eugene Evans, senior vice president of digital strategy and licensing at WotC, revealed that the company had over 40 video game projects in various stages of development across both internal and external studios. However, Hasbro and WotC have been implementing cost-cutting measures, impacting their ambitious gaming initiatives. Earlier this year, Hasbro shut down Atomic Arcade, an internal studio that was developing a G.I. Joe game, and now the D&D project has also been axed, despite the franchise’s growing popularity. Currently, Exodus, an anticipated sci-fi game reminiscent of the long-desired Mass Effect sequel, is still slated for a 2027 release.
