Rick and Morty Movie Confirmed with Top Director at the Helm

The beloved animated series Rick and Morty is making its way to the big screen. Ahead of the season 9 premiere on May 24, co-creator Dan Harmon confirmed that a movie is in the works, directed by supervising director Jacob Hair.

Hair joined the team during season 4 and directed some standout episodes, including “The Old Man and the Seat,” “Rattlestar Ricklactica,” and “The Vat of Acid Episode.” If you need a refresher, those episodes feature memorable moments like Rick’s private planet for bathroom breaks, the snake planet, and Morty’s video game save point that erases a significant relationship. Each of these episodes packs a cinematic punch in a short runtime, so it’s exciting to think about what Hair could achieve with a full-length feature.

Showrunner Scott Marder mentioned that fans can get a taste of Hair’s directorial style by tuning into the upcoming season 9. As supervising director, Hair oversees all the directors, influencing the overall quality of each episode. Harmon also noted that having Hair at the helm of the movie is the best choice, rather than bringing in someone unfamiliar with the series.

Rumors of a feature-length Rick and Morty movie have circulated for a while, and the recent leak prompted Harmon to confirm its development. In October 2023, he shared that he had started early discussions about the film.

“My philosophy would be to take a Rick and Morty adventure, throw in a bigger budget, and stretch it to 90 minutes,” Harmon explained. “The goal isn’t to earn feature status through dramatic shifts but to create an epic episode of Rick and Morty.”

It seems we can expect the movie to deliver the same wild sci-fi antics fans love, though it’s still unclear if it will fit into the narrative between seasons or stand alone. For now, fans can look forward to four more full seasons, with the possibility of even more if the show’s contract is renewed in the future.
