Kanto Comes to Life in Pokémon Pokopia After Two Months of Development
Over two months post-launch, a dedicated player has crafted an impressive, nearly complete replica of the Kanto region in Pokémon Pokopia.
This project was shared on Reddit by a user who has been chronicling their journey since the game’s release. Utilizing the blank Palette Town map, they’ve worked diligently to recreate the original Pokémon map with remarkable accuracy, and the results are visually striking. You can browse through a collection of their work-in-progress images to see just how closely it resembles the classic.
However, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The creator admits to not adhering to the “measure twice, cut once” principle, which led to starting their build in a less-than-ideal location. This resulted in uneven space distribution, with one side of the map feeling cramped while the other has excess room. To adapt, they’ve had to compress certain areas. As they noted, “With the loss of routes 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 24, and 25; losing most of routes 8, 10, 12, and 17; having to shrink Cerulean, Celadon, and Fuchsia Cities; AND having to fudge the spatial relationships of the locations a bit… yes, it can be done.”
There’s some impressive detail in their work, too. While most buildings lack 1:1 interiors, a few notable exceptions include Professor Oak’s Lab and, surprisingly, Mt. Moon, which players can traverse just like in the original games. However, they opted for a simpler design for places like Diglett Cave, turning it into a standard tunnel instead.
Interestingly, the initial lack of precise measurements has given them some extra space on the western side of the map. They plan to utilize this area to create Route 29, which links Victory Road and the Pokémon League to Johto, along with New Bark Town, the point of connection. Unfortunately, there’s no room left for the rest of Johto.
This ambitious project is genuinely impressive, and it’s understandable that it took two months to develop. Many other creators have tackled parts of Kanto or built locations from other games, such as structures from the Mystery Dungeon series, entire towns from Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, or Prism Tower from Pokémon X and Y. Meanwhile, some players are focusing on restoring Kanto, like one individual who has revitalized the Pewter Museum, enhancing it beyond its original glory.
