Upcoming God of War installment may finally unveil a major series mystery.

Months after a leak hinted at a new God of War title on the horizon, excitement is building among fans as Summer Game Fest approaches. Speculation is rife about what the next chapter in the Norse saga might hold, particularly regarding the rumored protagonist, Faye, and whether it will finally shed light on a long-standing mystery: Who blew the horn?

For those familiar with the series, Faye is the late wife of Kratos and the mother of Atreus (aka Loki). Known as Laufey, she was a Giant (Jötunn) warrior from Midgard, a fact she kept hidden from many close to her. Game director Cory Barlog has previously expressed a strong connection to Faye, stating she was the character he resonated with the most in 2018’s God of War.

One popular theory among fans is that Faye could be the enigmatic figure who sounded the horn to summon Jörmungandr, the World Serpent, during a pivotal moment in the 2018 game. This incident occurred while Kratos was helping an injured Atreus return to Freya, and the identity of the hornblower has sparked much debate. Barlog and the development team have been tight-lipped about this mystery, but theories abound, suggesting possibilities ranging from Æsir like Baldur and Odin to Faye herself, or even a future version of Atreus/Loki. Barlog has confirmed that Kratos was not the one who blew the horn and has promised to address this question in the future.

Recently, fans have been discussing the theory that Faye might have been the one to blow the horn, with one Reddit user proposing that her time-traveling abilities, possibly linked to her battle with Thor in Vanaheim as shown in God of War Ragnarök, could explain her involvement. The theory suggests that just as Faye left hints for Kratos and Atreus in the afterlife, she might also be physically intervening in their journey, existing in both life and death simultaneously.

While the theory from Reddit user felix_semicolon is acknowledged as “not watertight,” they are not alone in believing that Faye could play a more significant role in Kratos and Atreus’ adventures than previously assumed.

If the rumors about Faye leading the next God of War game hold true, it would fulfill Barlog’s long-held desire to explore her story and reveal her crucial role in the journey of Kratos and Atreus. In a 2020 interview, Barlog described Faye and Kratos as warriors who have reached a point in their lives where they no longer wish to fight, having gained clarity on their past struggles. He emphasized that their meeting at such a pivotal moment fundamentally changes both characters.

Barlog also hinted at Faye’s immense power within the universe, stating, “She is actually the controller of so much within this universe. […] I don’t know how we’re going to tell this or when we’re going to tell this, but I really want to tell that story of Kratos and Faye meeting.”

In the coming weeks, we should find out if the rumors about Faye’s involvement in the next God of War game are accurate. Whether this narrative will also be reflected in the upcoming television adaptation remains to be seen, but it certainly sounds like compelling material for a potential season 3, especially when adapting the Norse trilogy.

While it may not break new ground in the Metroidvania genre, Sons of Sparta is a solid addition to the God of War universe.
