Critical Role Unveils the Official Dol-Makjar Map for Campaign 4

When the co-founders of Critical Role discussed Campaign 4, the topic of a long-awaited feature came up: a map. Despite Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan’s vivid storytelling about the world of Aramán, especially the lively city of Dol-Makjar, fans had yet to see a visual representation of the world or its cities.

Taliesin Jaffe previously acknowledged this oversight, assuring fans that a stunning map did exist. After much anticipation, we can confirm that Jaffe was right: Dol-Makjar’s map is indeed breathtaking.

The map has been made available on the official Critical Role website within the lore section for Campaign 4. It’s a bit tricky to locate, as you’ll need to scroll to the very end of the “Dol-Makjar” section. The city has been beautifully illustrated by Andy Law, an artist and cartographer who has collaborated with Critical Role on various projects, including the Tal’Dorei continent map for the campaign setting book, Tal’Dorei Reborn.

J.R.R. Tolkien once noted that starting with a map was essential for world-building, as it helps avoid confusion. While Mulligan’s narration of Dol-Makjar is captivating, the visual aspect can be challenging to grasp for some.

The newly revealed map offers a wealth of details about Dol-Makjar that were previously unknown. It showcases the city’s vastness, explaining why the Schemers’ table seems perpetually exhausted from their daily runs across its multiple districts.

The map highlights 16 districts, illustrating how social status and class influence their locations. For instance, the Tanners district, located to the south, is depicted as rundown and seedy, where illicit activities can occur both openly and in secret. In contrast, Villa Aurora, home to the Candescent Creed and House Halovar, appears much more welcoming, situated near Dol-Makjar Castle and the renowned Lloy Estate.

One of the most exciting features is the depiction of Halandil Fang’s renowned amphitheater, the Hallowed Round. Positioned just outside Dol-Makjar’s southern walls, its size on the map emphasizes the grandeur of Hal’s theater company and hints at the monumental play that several of the Sundered Houses will attend in upcoming episodes of Campaign 4.

The unveiling of this city map is sure to excite fans who love cartography, and with such intricate design, it’s easy to see why.
