Ex-Star Wars Writer Shares Vision for Rey’s New Jedi Order Film: Balancing Nostalgia and Innovation

The long-anticipated Star Wars film featuring Daisy Ridley as Rey, which was set to explore her journey in establishing a new Jedi Order, has been stuck in development limbo for several years. Various writers have taken a shot at crafting a script, but progress has been slow. Recently, Damon Lindelof, known for co-creating Lost and working on the upcoming Lanterns series, shared insights about his take on the project.

In a conversation on a podcast, Lindelof discussed his experience with the Rey-centric sequel. He revealed that before the film was officially announced in 2023, he was brought on board but was later let go, only to see new writers face similar challenges. “Just to address the elephant in the room,” Lindelof remarked. “I was fired from a Star Wars movie. They asked me what I thought a Star Wars film should be, and I shared my vision. They liked it and hired me, but two years later, I was out. So, I guess I was mistaken. At least from that perspective. What my team and I were trying to convey was the conflict between nostalgia and revisionism within the franchise. We aimed to create a sort of Protestant Reformation within Star Wars, but it didn’t pan out.”

He went on to express uncertainty about whether his dismissal was solely due to script issues, noting that Lucasfilm seemed to appreciate the concept. However, he pointed out that the franchise currently lacks a clear direction. The challenge lies in expanding the universe beyond Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker while maintaining the right tone for the story.

“It’s like steering a massive ship; you turn the wheel, and it takes a while for any change to be felt,” he explained. “We’re searching for the core of Star Wars. When The Force Awakens debuted, we had a clear focus with Rey, Finn, and Poe, alongside the legacy characters like Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewbacca. The expectation was that by the end of this trilogy, we’d be launching with these new characters as the heart of Star Wars. Now, the question is whether Mando and Grogu have become that new center.”

As it stands, even Lucasfilm might not have a definitive answer to that question. The upcoming Mando film’s performance at the box office will be crucial in determining if these characters can successfully transition from the small screen to the big screen and if they will indeed become the new focal point of the Star Wars saga.
