Xbox Enlists Beloved Gaming Analyst to Revamp Strategy and Enhance Console Performance
Can Matthew Ball breathe new life into Microsoft’s struggling console gaming division? That’s the challenge he’s taken on as the new chief strategy officer for Xbox. Asha Sharma recently announced his addition to the executive team, with a mission to rejuvenate Xbox’s hardware prospects just as Project Helix gears up for its next-gen launch.
“Matthew has been collaborating with us on strategy since day 10 and will officially start this month, reporting to me,” Sharma shared in a memo to staff. She described him as a “long-time gamer” and highlighted his strong reputation across the gaming, media, and tech sectors. Reports indicate that his initial focus will be on bolstering Xbox’s console business.
While Ball is a familiar name in tech circles, particularly after his 2022 book on the metaverse, he has been less prominent in the gaming world. However, his influence is growing, thanks to viral presentations that dissect major gaming trends with compelling data and visuals.
In his latest report on the gaming landscape, released earlier this year, Ball cautioned that consoles are facing stagnation, with traditional gaming losing ground to the surge of short-form video, gambling, and adult content apps on mobile devices. He noted growth in markets like China and platforms such as Roblox, but painted a bleak picture for the AAA blockbuster sector that has historically driven the industry.
Sharma echoed these concerns in her memo to Xbox staff, outlining the division’s core values and objectives as it seeks to regain fan loyalty and revamp a gaming platform that has struggled against competitors like Sony and Nintendo this generation. Despite Microsoft boasting record active user numbers across its extensive service network, Xbox hardware continues to see significant year-over-year declines, and Game Pass growth seems to have plateaued, even after substantial investments in publishers and studios.
In addition to Ball’s hiring, Sharma has also brought on Scott Van Vliet, who previously led Azure AI infrastructure, as Xbox’s new CTO, and appointed Chris Schnakenberg, a veteran from Activision, as VP of partnerships and business development. These appointments follow a series of leadership changes initiated by Sharma after she took over from Phil Spencer earlier this year.
“This is a world-class team being assembled, signaling a serious commitment to the future of gaming for Windows, Xbox, Minecraft, Call of Duty, and the many top-tier studios within the Microsoft family,” noted Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney.
