Donkey Kong is set to join the Lego universe with a new set!

Nintendo and The Lego Group have teamed up to create a variety of video game-themed sets over the years, featuring iconic franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Animal Crossing. They’ve also crafted buildable versions of classic hardware, including the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy. Now, a new addition from the Nintendo universe is on the horizon: Donkey Kong.

Recently, Lego and Nintendo teased the upcoming Lego Donkey Kong with a short video on social media, hinting at exciting developments. “There’s plenty more where this came from!” Lego mentioned in an Instagram post. While the full details are still under wraps, the glimpse of a rolling, pixelated barrel strongly suggests a theme centered around the classic arcade game Donkey Kong.

The barrel featured in the teaser resembles the orange and blue ones from the original 1981 Donkey Kong, indicating that the set will draw inspiration from this groundbreaking arcade title. It’s easy to envision a buildable version of the game’s first stage, complete with rolling barrels cascading down platforms. If this is the direction they’re taking, we might see Lego renditions of Jumpman (Mario) and Lady (Pauline), along with Lego versions of the iconic Fireballs.

Over the past six years, Nintendo and Lego have embraced creativity in their designs. Their sets have included everything from play-focused Super Mario courses to impressive Mario Kart and Bowser builds. The Lego NES was particularly intricate, featuring a miniature CRT television displaying a working Super Mario Bros. level. The Lego Game Boy set introduced swappable cartridges and lenticular game screens for added fun.

This year alone, Lego has released two major Nintendo sets: one depicting the epic showdown from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and another featuring Luigi from Mario Kart. Additionally, new Pokémon-themed Lego sets have launched, with more on the way. There’s also a new Mario minifigure slated for release in 2027.

On another note, Donkey Kong is set to star in his own stand-alone animated movie from Nintendo and Illumination, which could hit theaters as early as 2028.

While the release date for the Lego Donkey Kong set hasn’t been announced yet, fans are eagerly awaiting more information as it becomes available.
