Sony Increases PS Plus Prices, Sparking Player Outrage
Earlier this week, Sony announced plans to increase the price of its PlayStation Plus Essential subscription, and the gaming community wasn’t thrilled. Now that the price changes have taken effect, it turns out that all tiers of PlayStation Plus are seeing price hikes, which Sony didn’t fully clarify in its initial announcement. As expected, this has led to even more frustration among players.
On May 21, the new PS Plus pricing went live for both new and returning subscribers in various regions, including the United States. We already knew that the PS Plus Essential tier, which offers a handful of free games each month and online multiplayer access, would rise from $10 to $11 per month, with the three-month plan increasing from $25 to $27. However, Sony failed to clearly communicate that the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers would also see slight price increases.
Here are the updated PS Plus prices (thanks to Wario64) for all tiers compared to their previous rates:
1-Month:
– Premium: $19.99 (up from $17.99)
– Extra: $16.99 (up from $14.99)
– Essential: $10.99 (up from $9.99)
3-Months:
– Premium: $54.99 (up from $49.99)
– Extra: $43.99 (up from $39.99)
– Essential: $27.99 (up from $24.99)
As confirmed by Sony, the price increase does not affect existing customers (with the exception of those in India and Turkey), and the annual subscription price remains unchanged.
When Sony first announced the price hike, it only disclosed the new rates for the Essential tier, vaguely suggesting that other tiers would also see increases with the phrase “prices will start at…”. It feels a bit disingenuous for Sony to obscure the fact that all tiers were going up. Players would inevitably discover the changes and share their discontent. Remember, to enjoy online gaming on a PS5 or PS4, a PS Plus subscription is necessary—though free-to-play titles like Fortnite are exceptions to this rule. For many gamers, PS Plus is not just an option; it’s essential.
