First Look at Virtua Fighter 6 Revealed in Leaked Trailer

We’ve been anticipating a new entry in the Virtua Fighter series for a while now, and our first real look at it came during the 2024 Game Awards. However, calling it a “look” might be a stretch, as it was simply referred to as the “New Virtua Fighter Project.” Recently, a leaked snippet of what appears to be a much longer trailer has surfaced online, hinting that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is working on something exciting.

This leaked footage appeared on Bilibili in the early hours of May 21, and while skepticism is understandable, it seems quite authentic. This clip is clearly just a portion of a more extensive trailer, but it reveals some intriguing details, including the game’s full title: Virtua Fighter Crossroads.

While the gameplay footage could potentially be fabricated, the presence of RGG Studio developers discussing the game adds credibility. If you don’t speak Japanese, you might find it challenging, but thankfully, there’s a translation available.

Among the various insights, one comment from an RGG developer stood out: “People tend to think of Virtua Fighter as a unique and complex game, but my first impression was completely different. There weren’t any difficult commands—it was a game you could enjoy with simple controls using just three buttons: punch, kick, and guard… We wanted to preserve that ability to play through intuitive controls alone, so while keeping that intact, this time we’re brushing everything up and reexamining the game from the ground up.”

I can see where he’s coming from. The input mechanics in Virtua Fighter have always been less intricate compared to its peers, so I’m curious to see how RGG plans to “reexamine” the combo system.

From the leaked gameplay, it also looks like Virtua Fighter Crossroads is drawing some visual inspiration from the latest Street Fighter and Tekken titles, which has definitely ramped up my excitement for this project. Here’s hoping Sega drops the full trailer soon, so we don’t have to wait until EVO in June to see the complete reveal.
