William Shatner Critiques Kirk Card from MTG Star Trek Set, Claims It Looks AI-Generated

Magic: The Gathering is set to embark on an exciting new journey with the upcoming release of a Star Trek Universes Beyond set this November. Among the highlights, one card will showcase Captain Kirk on the bridge of the iconic original Enterprise, but it seems that William Shatner isn’t too thrilled about it.

While the complete reveal is still pending, initial artwork for a leaked Commander deck card from the Star Trek crossover was shared with Shatner by a fan on social media, prompting him to critique it. “They should redo the card as he looks like he didn’t have his Kellogg’s Raisin Bran that morning and will have some trouble boldly ‘going’!” Shatner quipped, implying that the depiction of Kirk made him appear rather uncomfortable in his captain’s chair.

Another fan chimed in with, “Here is a better look at the art,” but Shatner wasn’t impressed. He described the artwork as looking like a mess, stating, “It looks like it’s AI. There’s lots of things not ‘right’ about it: Where’s Kirk’s right thumb? The characters on the right are poorly executed, and why is Spock leaning to the right like???”

Shatner also took issue with Spock’s portrayal in the background, noting, “BTW, I straightened the image out using the seatback as a straight edge, and he’s still like that tower in Pisa, Italy.” It’s hard to tell if he was being serious or just having a bit of fun with the original yellow shirt.

The card, titled “Captain Kirk: Boldly Going,” is a gold Commander card featuring green, white, and blue colors. It boosts spacecraft creatures by +3/+3 and allows players to search their deck for basic lands or any cards named Starship Enterprise. Some fans are already labeling it a flavor fail, but we’ll have to wait for the rest of the set to be revealed to see how it truly performs.
