Bungie Braces for Major Layoffs Following Destiny 2’s Conclusion

Destiny 2 is set to conclude with its last live-service update on June 9. While Bungie framed this as a positive shift, heralding “a new beginning for Bungie” and the chance to “start work incubating our next games,” reports suggest that this may indicate challenges ahead for the studio.

Sources indicate that parent company Sony is planning to implement a “significant number of layoffs” as development on Destiny 2 wraps up. The report highlights that Bungie currently lacks a new project for the team, and there are no immediate plans for a third installment in the shooter MMO series. Staff members have been eager to pitch new ideas, including potential new Destiny titles, but nothing has received the green light yet.

The report does not specify the number of layoffs or whether any members of the Destiny 2 team might be reassigned to support Marathon, Bungie’s extraction shooter that launched earlier this year. The company recently shared a new roadmap for Marathon, which includes plans to experiment with fresh PvE elements.

The final update for Destiny 2, titled Monument of Triumph, will serve as a farewell to the game’s characters as Bungie aims to ensure the franchise continues “beyond Destiny 2.” For now, Destiny 2 will remain playable for the foreseeable future, but fans are already feeling the loss of a game they’ve invested nearly a decade into.
