The Mandalorian and Grogu Experience Records Lowest Opening Weekend for a Disney Star Wars Film

This weekend, the box office performance of *Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu* was less than stellar, marking the first Star Wars film to hit theaters since 2019.

According to reports, the film’s three-day earnings are currently at $82 million. When including Memorial Day, the total is projected to reach around $102 million for its opening weekend in the U.S. While it did surpass the opening weekend of *The Devil Wears Prada 2*, it will need that extra Memorial Day boost to outpace the opening gross of *Michael*. The top spot for the biggest opening weekend of the year still belongs to *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*.

Though *The Mandalorian and Grogu* had a decent opening by 2026 standards, it falls short when compared to other recent Star Wars releases. The previous low for Disney’s Star Wars films was *Solo: A Star Wars Story*, which opened at $103 million in 2018. *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, which also debuted on Memorial Day weekend, is tracking slightly behind that figure.

Analysts suggest that *The Mandalorian and Grogu* may not be as financially disappointing for Disney as *Solo* was, primarily because it was produced on a smaller budget. However, this subdued box office performance contributes to the perception that the film doesn’t quite meet the high expectations typically associated with a major Star Wars release.

On a more positive note, the weekend’s box office highlight was *Obsession*, an indie horror film from Focus Features that was made for under $1 million. Estimates suggest it will earn around $28.2 million over the four-day weekend. *Obsession* follows the success of *Iron Lung*, demonstrating that there is a market for low-budget horror films, proving that a massive IP like Star Wars isn’t always necessary for a film to succeed.

Star Wars fans can look forward to another opportunity for box office success next year, with *Star Wars: Starfighter* set to release on May 28, 2027.
