Marvel unveils a sneak peek of X-Men ’97 Season 2 featuring Apocalypse.

Marvel Animation has dropped the first trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2, announcing a release date of July 1 for the Disney Plus series that brings back Marvel’s iconic mutants.

However, the mood in Season 2 isn’t exactly bright. The X-Men find themselves scattered across time, facing the ominous threat of Apocalypse looming over both their past and future. Rogue is mourning her lost love, Gambit, while Jubilee is in sorrow, but Nightcrawler remains hopeful that the team can be rescued. The time-traveling mutant Bishop has one mission: to return the X-Men to their rightful era—the 1990s!

Here’s what Marvel has to say about it:

X-Men ’97 Season 2 follows the heroic mutant team as they navigate their way back home, divided and thrown into different time periods. Meanwhile, in the 1990s, new enemies and rising mutant intolerance emerge in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.

This season will consist of nine episodes, featuring a voice cast that includes Ross Marquand as Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast.

The first season of X-Men ’97, which premiered in 2024, ended on a classic cliffhanger, leaving many X-Men severely injured, dead (but possibly on the verge of resurrection), or lost in both the distant future and ancient Egypt. The new trailer showcases the X-Men across various time periods, highlighting characters like Rogue, Polaris, and Rachel Summers. Plus, fans can catch a glimpse of Deadpool, along with Wolverine, who makes a triumphant return, paying homage to Frank Miller’s iconic cover for Wolverine #1 from 1982.

Though the wait for Season 2 has felt lengthy, there’s even more to anticipate: Season 3 of X-Men ’97 is already in the works, with Matthew Chauncey, a writer from Marvel’s What If…?, stepping in to replace head writer Beau DeMayo. The entire voice cast is expected to return, along with some exciting new additions like Gates McFadden (Star Trek: The Next Generation) as Mother Askani and Adetokumboh M’Cormack (Castlevania) as En Sabah Nur.

You can currently catch Season 1 of X-Men ’97 streaming on Disney Plus.

Additionally, prelude comics will serve as a bridge between the seasons of this animated favorite.
