Nintendo Switch Players Disappointed by Latest Witcher 3 DLC
Developer CD Projekt Red has thrown fans for a loop by revealing that The Witcher 3 will receive its 19th content update in 2027, introducing a new DLC titled Songs of the Past. This announcement comes more than ten years after the beloved open-world RPG first launched, following a series of substantial expansions and free updates. While the news has been met with excitement, it seems to have left Nintendo Switch owners feeling a bit neglected.
So far, Songs of the Past has only been confirmed for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The absence of a Nintendo Switch 2 version isn’t too shocking, given that the platform hasn’t yet seen an upgraded port. However, the original Nintendo Switch did get a version of the game back in 2019, now referred to as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Complete Edition. Since Songs of the Past isn’t out yet, calling that earlier release a Complete Edition isn’t entirely inaccurate. Still, fans on the Switch are expressing their disappointment over being left out of the latest announcement.
“Big miss for CD Projekt Red,” one fan lamented on Reddit, while another shared their feelings with a simple crying emoji on X.
There is still hope for a Nintendo version of Songs of the Past. The Switch version of The Witcher 3 launched four years after it debuted on other platforms, likely due to the hardware’s limitations. The Nintendo Switch 2 is a more powerful console, but it still trails behind some competitors.
If Cyberpunk 2077 is any indication, CD Projekt Red and co-developer Fool’s Theory will need to optimize the DLC for Nintendo’s system. However, Cyberpunk 2077 is considered one of the standout ports on the Switch, suggesting that adapting a Witcher 3 DLC could be a quicker process than the original game’s transition to the platform.
Nintendo is known for keeping its announcements close to the chest. It’s possible that a Nintendo Switch version of Songs of the Past is in the works, but CD Projekt Red may choose to unveil it during a Nintendo Direct, similar to how they announced Cyberpunk 2077. Such an event would be an ideal setting for CD Projekt Red to promote a Nintendo Switch 2 “Ultimate” version that includes all the Witcher 3 DLC. This port could also feature Nintendo-specific enhancements, as seen with Cyberpunk 2077’s tailored controls and unique packaging. If CD Projekt Red managed to fit all of Cyberpunk 2077 onto a cartridge, then Nintendo Switch 2 players might not have to worry about dealing with controversial downloadable Game-Key Cards.
So, hang in there, Nintendo Switch 2 owners. You might just get to ride Roach again… eventually.
