Hideo Kojima Takes Center Stage in Prada’s New AI-Driven Space Adventure

Hideo Kojima, the visionary behind Metal Gear and Death Stranding, has always had a passion for cinema. With his newfound clout, he’s branching out into film projects alongside his gaming endeavors, including the upcoming Death Stranding movie. Before diving into that, he’s collaborating with fashion brand Prada and director Nicolas Winding Refn, who plays Heartman in the Death Stranding series, on a short film. However, it’s worth tempering expectations, as it’s an AI-generated creation.

This short film is part of Prada’s Mode event happening in New York from June 3 to 7, featuring Winding Refn and Kojima as space travelers navigating a loosely connected narrative that culminates at the Chelsea Hotel, the venue for the event. Winding Refn shared a teaser of the six-minute video, which reveals a nostalgic homage to 1950s sci-fi aesthetics, though it doesn’t quite hit the mark visually.

In a statement about the project, Winding Refn expressed, “Throughout our extended friendship, Hideo Kojima and I have shared the feeling that we were somehow split from the same consciousness moving through different lives while orbiting the same obsessions.” This concept inspired a film that explores a sci-fi dreamscape, blending artistic experimentation with the innovative potential of AI technology.

It’s surprising to see Kojima endorse this short film, given its awkward execution. He has previously stated that he views AI as a transformative force in game development, akin to the shift to 3D, and even considers it “a friend.” Perhaps this aligns with his vision. Still, one might argue he could benefit from collaborating with more traditional creatives rather than relying on AI to simulate the adventurous narratives they seem to be sidestepping, all while appealing to an elite audience that often romanticizes the detachment of art from its human roots.
