Employees at the studio known for popular Star Wars and Cyberpunk comics are forming a union.

Workers at the well-known graphic novel company behind popular titles like Star Wars, Cyberpunk, and Avatar: The Last Airbender are taking steps to form a union with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), as revealed by the group today.

In their announcement, known as Dark Horse Workers United, they stated that 59 eligible employees have signed a letter addressed to interim CEO Jay Komas, urging him to voluntarily recognize the union by June 1st. However, there is a note on their website indicating a deadline of June 3rd, and they are seeking clarification on this. If their request is not met, they plan to petition for a union election through the National Labor Relations Board.

The announcement also references company founder Mike Richardson, who departed earlier this year following the company’s acquisition by Embracer Group in 2022. Dark Horse Workers United aims to enhance working conditions and uphold Richardson’s legacy of supporting creator-owned comics.

The group expressed that recent layoffs, a wage and hiring freeze, shifts in leadership, the rise of artificial intelligence, and return-to-office policies—despite their negative impact on employees—have motivated them to organize and collectively voice their concerns. They highlighted these issues as key reasons for pursuing a more democratic workplace.

Dark Horse Workers United has launched a public petition for the union’s voluntary recognition and is encouraging supporters to add their names.
