Overwatch Delivers Long-Awaited Feature Fans Have Desired Since 2016
Overwatch has entered an exciting narrative phase since its soft reboot in February, delivering a steady stream of lore updates that propel the story forward for the first time in the game’s decade-long history. The ongoing conflict sees the peacekeeping Overwatch facing off against the new Vendetta-led version of the Talon terrorist organization. Alongside this central storyline, there’s been a focus on the everyday lives of the characters, culminating in the long-awaited development of a fan-favorite relationship.
For those catching up on the lore through the game’s narrative reader, it’s worth noting that there’s a collaboration with Webtoon on Overwatch: Undivided, a webcomic that explores the heroes’ lives following Vendetta’s attack on Watchpoint: Gibraltar. New chapters drop every Wednesday, primarily told through the eyes of Juno, a young hero raised on a Mars space station. Her fresh perspective makes her an ideal guide for readers diving into the Overwatch universe. While not every character gets extensive screen time, many familiar faces appear, whether in supporting roles or as background figures.
It’s refreshing to see characters who have been largely apart in the lore finally coming together. The younger heroes are forming friendships and discovering what it truly means to be part of Overwatch. They bring new insights to situations that seasoned veterans like Ana and Reinhardt might overlook. After witnessing a conversation between the two about their past, Juno and Wuyang decide to play matchmaker, orchestrating a dinner date for the two. Currently, the first 13 issues of Overwatch: Undivided are available on Webtoon, with subscribers able to access up to issue 18. In issue 15, the younger recruits start buzzing about Reinhardt and Ana’s relationship, scheming to bring the two old soldiers closer after years of missed opportunities.
The crew has been staying at Torbjorn’s home in Gothenburg post-Gibraltar attack, providing a cozy setting for their mission. Wuyang and Juno enlist some help to set up a charming dinner date for Ana and Reinhardt, where they reminisce about their shared history in the original Overwatch and reflect on the lack of time for something “real.” With Ana now single after her separation from Sam, the two are finally considering what they’ve been missing. After a decade of fan speculation, Ana and Reinhardt’s relationship is now officially part of the lore.
While Overwatch ships have existed since the game’s inception, few relationships between playable heroes have been fully realized. In the past, the narrative team, led by Michael Chu, indicated that romantic relationships weren’t a primary focus, often pairing characters with those outside the playable roster. Tracer’s girlfriend Emily made her debut in a 2016 comic, and Soldier: 76’s ex-boyfriend Vincent was introduced in a 2019 short story, only becoming a fully fleshed-out character in the 2025 Pride event short story. However, it seems Blizzard is becoming more open to exploring hero relationships. Emre and Freja have a complex, angsty history, and there was a moment of flirtation between Lifeweaver and Baptiste in their pre-match dialogue. With Lifeweaver receiving a new pansexual flag-themed skin for this year’s Pride event, and past Pride cosmetics often coinciding with new lore drops, there’s hope that their relationship might evolve beyond mere flirtation soon.
