Highlights to Anticipate at PlayStation’s Summer State of Play Event

The summer gaming showcase season is just around the corner, and one of the highlights will be an hour-long State of Play stream from Sony on June 2. While the full lineup remains a mystery, we do know that Insomniac’s Wolverine will take center stage. What else might be in store? Let’s dive into the speculation.

The livestream is set for Tuesday, June 2, at 2 p.m. Pacific/5 p.m. Eastern, and you can catch it on PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch channels. A YouTube stream link is already available, so if you plan to tune in there, feel free to bookmark it.

For those looking for a more communal experience, Sony has teamed up with select Alamo Drafthouse locations to offer free screenings of the event. While admission is free, attendees will need to buy a food voucher. Tickets are going fast, so check your local theater soon if you want to enjoy the show on the big screen. Participating locations include:

Currently, the only confirmed title for the showcase is Wolverine, which will kick off the event. Insomniac’s latest superhero adventure is set to launch on PS5 on September 15, making this a prime opportunity for Sony to ramp up its marketing efforts as the release date approaches.

Sony has several projects in the pipeline, some of which are closer to release than others. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was announced at last year’s showcase and is scheduled for an August 6 release, so expect to see more about it, possibly including new character reveals. There’s also a chance we’ll get updates on Horizon Hunters Gathering, the co-op spin-off of the Horizon series.

In addition to these confirmed titles, there are a few games from Sony’s studios that could make an appearance, even without set release dates. Naughty Dog’s sci-fi action game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been under wraps since its reveal at the Game Awards 2024, and if it’s aiming for a 2025 release, this could be a good time for a sneak peek—unless they decide to save it for another major event. The studio is also working on Fairgames, a live-service shooter that remains in development despite some challenges at Haven Studios.

While we know about these confirmed games, there’s always the possibility of new announcements during the State of Play. Rumors suggest a God of War spin-off featuring Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye, is in development, which aligns with hints from Kratos’ voice actor, Christopher Judge, about collaborating with Santa Monica Studio. Additionally, Sony has been exploring the revival of some of its classic franchises, so we might see some familiar faces return. If it’s not my kleptomaniac raccoon son, then I’m not interested.

Sony won’t be the only player in the spotlight during the State of Play. The company has a marketing deal with Rockstar for Grand Theft Auto 6, and while that title doesn’t need any extra promotion, if it were to appear in these summer showcases, this would be the place. However, temper your expectations; there’s no need for outrage if the open-world crime saga doesn’t make an appearance, as it seems to be on track for a later this year launch.

Last year’s summer State of Play featured a wide array of games, from indie gems to major titles, so it’s anyone’s guess what will fill the gaps this time. There are whispers of a Rayman Origins remaster, some alleged Persona 6 leaks, and likely updates on existing live-service games. With an hour-long show to fill, we can only hope for some surprises that catch us off guard.
