Xbox Postpones Fable Reboot to Avoid Competition with GTA 6 and Other 2026 Releases
The highly anticipated reboot of Fable has been pushed back, as announced by Xbox in a recent update. Initially slated for a fall 2026 release, Fable is now set to debut in February 2027, although an exact date has yet to be confirmed.
The announcement highlighted several major titles still on the horizon for this year, including Halo: Campaign Evolved and Grand Theft Auto 6, and explained that the delay aims to give Fable the space it needs amidst the crowded release schedule. Xbox stated, “To plan our game launches through the holidays in a way that benefits players, we’re moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves.”
In a recent episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Matt Booty, Xbox’s chief content officer, shared that Fable is progressing well in development. “The game is in great shape. The team feels really good. We’re excited about where the game is,” he noted. “We really just wanted Fable to have its own moment to shine.”
Despite the delay, fans can expect a “major new look” at the game during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, which will also feature new game announcements and detailed previews of upcoming titles like Gears of War: E-Day.
Fable was first revealed in 2020, with Playground Games initially aiming for a 2025 release before it was pushed to 2026. Just last month, it was still on track for a fall 2026 launch. When it finally arrives in February 2027, Fable will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
This reboot revives the choice-driven RPG series that first launched in 2004. The last main installment was Fable 3 in 2010, making this reboot the first new entry since the 2017 free-to-play card game, Fable Fortune.
We survived until ’25. Maybe it will all be fixed in ’26…
