A Tekken Icon Bids Farewell to Bandai Namco

The Tekken franchise is experiencing a dynamic shift, reflecting broader changes in the fighting game landscape. Last year, it was revealed that Katsuhiro Harada, the iconic figure behind Tekken, would be departing from Bandai Namco. This was soon followed by the announcement in May that Harada is teaming up with former competitor SNK Corporation to establish a new studio. Now, another key player in the Tekken universe, Kohei Ikeda, has also announced his exit from Bandai Namco.

Ikeda served as the game director for both Tekken 7 and Tekken 8, playing a pivotal role in defining the series’ contemporary direction. His journey with Bandai Namco began in 2007, and in a heartfelt farewell, he reflected on his early passion for fighting games and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to a franchise that has profoundly influenced his life.

Speculation is rife about whether Ikeda will join Harada at VSStudioSNK. It’s not uncommon for talented team members to follow a leader to new ventures, and given their history of collaboration on Tekken 7, it seems plausible. Meanwhile, the Tekken series continues to thrive, with the recent announcement of Yujiro Hanma from the Baki franchise as a guest fighter for Tekken 8’s season 3 generating significant buzz and boosting sales.

While fighting games may not dominate the gaming scene as they once did, the genre remains vibrant and full of potential. Fans are eagerly awaiting Harada’s new project, and it will be interesting to see if Kohei Ikeda will be part of that journey as well.
