Onimusha: Way of the Sword Set for Fall Launch, Demo Available Now
Capcom made a splash during Sony’s June 2026 State of Play by unveiling more details about Onimusha: Way of the Sword, including its long-awaited release date. Gamers can look forward to diving into the action on September 25, available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
In addition, a demo is set to launch today, giving players a taste of what’s to come.
After a period of silence regarding the game’s narrative, Capcom finally revealed some intriguing elements. Players will step into the shoes of Musashi as he battles unique Genma and navigates a castle filled with traps and demons. However, exceptional swordsmanship alone won’t cut it; he’ll need to collect souls to succeed. The trailer showcases plenty of action, offering a refreshing break from the usual Soulslike titles.
The original Onimusha, titled Onimusha: Warlords, debuted in 2001 on the PlayStation 2. While the first three games followed samurai fighting against the forces of Oda Nobunaga, they took creative liberties with history. In this universe, Nobunaga harnesses the power of Genma, spirits from Japanese folklore. Onimusha: Way of the Sword isn’t a direct sequel, as it unfolds in Edo-era Kyoto, and series producer Keiji Inafune has indicated that the Nobunaga storyline has concluded. Nevertheless, Genma remain central to the plot, with Capcom teasing new Genma through weekly “Oni Memo” updates on Steam. The latest reveal features Dokyo, a “mad scientist” intent on creating more Genma in his lab—definitely a risky endeavor.
2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for Capcom. Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks their fourth AAA title, following the massive success of Resident Evil: Requiem, Pragmata, and the solid but less commercially successful Monster Hunter Stories 3. This year contrasts sharply with 2025, when Monster Hunter Wilds launched, quickly sold 10 million copies, and then fell behind in sales compared to Monster Hunter Rise. Capcom may have more surprises in store, as hints suggest that Dragon’s Dogma 2 could be gearing up for some DLC following its second anniversary artwork release in March.
Capcom’s revival of the samurai action franchise is a welcome shift in the gaming landscape.
