Top 7 Highlights from Microsoft Build 2026

Microsoft has kicked off Build 2026 with an exciting keynote featuring CEO Satya Nadella and other key figures from the company. The event was packed with announcements, showcasing everything from new Surface hardware to an always-on personal assistant and updates to Microsoft’s AI models.

For those who missed the live event, here’s a quick recap of the highlights.

A mini Surface PC designed for AI development

The Surface RTX Spark Dev Box is tailored for developers looking to run local AI models on their devices, stepping in for Qualcomm’s discontinued dev kit. It features Nvidia’s new Arm-based Spark RTX chip and 128GB of unified memory, along with preinstalled tools like Visual Studio Code and GitHub Copilot. The device also comes with a preconfigured version of Windows 11 Pro, complete with dark mode by default, a streamlined taskbar, and no widgets. While pricing and the complete specs are still under wraps, it’s set to launch in the US later this year.

Developer-optimized Windows updates

Microsoft is enhancing Windows to be more developer-friendly. This includes the introduction of Coreutils, which are described as “Linux-like command-line utilities that run natively” on Windows 11. Additionally, developers will now be able to create, run, and interact with Linux containers via the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), along with a new Intelligent Terminal that provides context for a developer’s preferred AI-powered agent.

An OS designed to connect AI agents across devices

Project Solara, an Android-based operating system, was unveiled, aimed at running AI agents across various devices. Developed in collaboration with Qualcomm and MediaTek, this system could serve as a companion to PCs or facilitate task handoffs between devices. During the keynote, Microsoft showcased sample devices that could utilize this tech, including a desktop hub and a digital badge.

Microsoft jumps on the OpenClaw bandwagon with Scout

Introducing Scout, an always-on assistant built on the OpenClaw open-source AI platform that gained traction earlier this year. Scout integrates with Microsoft 365 apps like Outlook, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams, designed to handle tasks in the background, such as organizing calendars, managing expense reports, and drafting emails. Scout is part of a larger suite of “Autopilot” agents, each with its own identity. Currently, Scout is available in desktop preview for select customers in the US, with plans for broader availability in the future.

Microsoft’s first in-house reasoning AI model

Microsoft is advancing its efforts to develop its own AI models, moving away from reliance on those created by OpenAI. During Build, the company introduced seven new models, including its first reasoning model, MAI-Thinking-1, which boasts 35 billion active parameters and a 128K context window, designed for complex multi-step instructions, long-context reasoning, and code generation. Updates were also announced for models focused on image, voice, and code generation, as well as transcription.

Windows adds guardrails for OpenClaw and other AI agents

In relation to OpenClaw, Microsoft is implementing safety measures for AI agents through Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC). This feature allows developers to establish guardrails for what AI agents can access on their devices. Additionally, an OpenClaw companion app will enable users to set up their own agents or connect to existing ones, all within a sandboxed environment.

A more stable quantum computing chip

Microsoft unveiled its next-generation quantum computing chip, Majorana 2, which promises to accelerate advancements in the field. This upgraded chip features qubits— the fundamental units of information in quantum computing— that are 1,000 times more accurate. The performance boost is attributed to a new material stack incorporating lead and other compounds. With these developments, Microsoft aims to achieve a practical quantum computer by 2029.
