Ubisoft Confirms Beyond Good and Evil 2 is Actively in Development

It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything new about Beyond Good and Evil 2, but Ubisoft has given us a glimmer of hope that the long-awaited title is still in the works. In a recent video interview, brand director Loïc Gounon confirmed that the game remains in active development.

For years, the status of Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been shrouded in uncertainty. Ubisoft seldom provides updates, leaving fans searching for any hints. Last November, it was revealed that Ubisoft was actively recruiting for the project. Gounon offered a more definitive confirmation of progress while discussing the challenges faced in remaking Rayman Legends.

“There was another constraint: That was, we don’t have any Rayman team anymore,” Gounon explained. “The last team was Rayman Legends. I was part of it, on Origins and Legends, and the team moved on to other projects. Some of them are currently working on Beyond Good and Evil 2. Others have left the company. We didn’t yet have that core team in place, including Michel Ancel, who left Ubisoft.”

This casual remark is one of the closest things we’ve had to an official update in years, aside from Ubisoft stating earlier this year that the game was not canceled. First announced in 2008 and re-revealed in 2017, Beyond Good and Evil 2 has encountered numerous delays over nearly two decades. Director Michel Ancel departed Ubisoft in 2020, although the company noted that he hadn’t been involved with the game “for some time.” In 2023, the project faced a heartbreaking setback with the passing of creative director Emile Morel at age 40. Fawzi Mesmar took over as creative director in 2024, but updates on the project have been sparse since then.

During the same interview, Gounon shared additional internal news from Ubisoft. In 2024, the company confirmed it was developing a new Rayman project at its Montpellier and Milan studios. Notably, Ancel, the creator of Rayman, is serving as a consultant on this new endeavor, despite leaving Ubisoft four years prior. This news sparked controversy, as Ancel had been accused of creating a toxic work environment during his tenure, a claim he denied. Gounon clarified Ancel’s role in Rayman Legends Retold.

“What we did was consult Michel on how to relaunch the brand, transitioning to 3D, and where to go next,” Gounon said. “We wanted his input to confirm our direction for the IP in terms of tone and character. We asked for his thoughts and had discussions about world-building. That’s where those conversations took place. Then the project started, and Michel moved on to a different path. He kindly agreed to consult on the project and assist us.”

Rayman Legends Retold is set to launch on October 1 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Meanwhile, Beyond Good and Evil 2 still lacks a release date. Rayman Legends Retold will introduce a new world, 3D levels, and music by Grant Kirkhope.
