Marathon’s Return Hampered by Server Problems

Marathon has just rolled out its biggest update since launch, but unfortunately, players are struggling to get in. Bungie’s extraction shooter is currently experiencing a lengthy server outage due to persistent error issues, right when it was set to welcome both new and returning players. This is a tough blow for a live-service game already trying to find its footing.

Season 2 of Marathon launched on June 2, introducing revamped progression systems, a new character type, and a fresh nighttime map along with a survival horror-inspired game mode. On paper, these updates looked fantastic, enticing many players to dive back in. Plus, with the game being free for the first week, it was the ideal opportunity to invite friends to join the fun.

Sadly, that’s been nearly impossible for most of the day. Just hours after the server maintenance wrapped up and the game went live, Bungie reported a surge in Weasel and Anteater error codes. A few hours later, the issues escalated to the point where the studio began handing out free loot packs to players. By around 7:00 p.m. ET, the servers were taken offline again to implement fixes.

“We need additional time to complete Marathon maintenance and deploy the patch,” Bungie announced around 9:00 p.m. ET, when the servers were initially expected to be back online. “We appreciate your patience and will provide additional updates when they are ready.” As of now, it’s unclear when the issues will be resolved.

“It’s frustrating how great the new season felt during the few matches I managed to play,” commented Twitch streamer Knitehawk. “Hopefully, the next update will sort everything out so we can really experience what the team has created.”

The timing couldn’t be worse, as hundreds of thousands were tuning into a major PlayStation State of Play summer showcase, which featured a promo for Marathon. With the game currently free, it was the perfect moment for curious players to download and try it out.

If Season 2 truly delivers, this rocky start might not be a major setback. However, with Destiny 2 being sunset and significant layoffs reportedly looming at Bungie, Marathon could use all the support it can get.
