The Most Stylish PS5 Game of the Day, Crafted by a Beloved Art Director
Tuesday’s State of Play kicked off with a bang, featuring Ikumi Nakamura unveiling the first gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 title, Kemuri. In this game, you step into the shoes of a yokai hunter, traversing urban landscapes in pursuit of supernatural creatures, and you can team up with friends if you have PlayStation Plus!
When Kemuri was first announced in 2023, the studio Unseen described it as a captivating mix of Japanese folklore, anime-inspired visuals, and contemporary culture. A significant aspect of the game revolves around clothing; as you forge contracts with various demons, you can “wear” them to harness their powers. While some yokai are rooted in real-world mythology, others have been uniquely crafted for the game.
The game’s press kit highlights that “this world challenges yokai hunters to confront existential themes and moral dilemmas as they track and fight their prey in fast-paced combat.” Players can collect a diverse array of yokai—some malevolent, others friendly—to change their appearance and unlock their supernatural abilities.
The latest gameplay trailer showcases the action-packed experience.
According to the PlayStation Blog, there are numerous combat styles available, with a few distinct archetypes emerging. You can choose to engage enemies up close or utilize magical powers from a distance.
Beyond its striking visuals, Kemuri promises an exhilarating gameplay experience. It features the kind of thrilling cityscape platforming reminiscent of titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man or Gravity Rush, infused with the vibrant energy of a Splatoon game aimed at the trend-savvy crowd.
Ikumi Nakamura, who gained a bit of fame in 2019 for her infectious enthusiasm, is no stranger to the gaming world. If you appreciate quality games, you might recognize her contributions to classics like Okami, Bayonetta, and Resident Evil 2. With her impressive background and keen fashion sense, it’s no surprise she’s at the helm of a project that looks this stylish. Unseen is even rolling out some trendy merchandise to go along with it.
Kemuri is set to launch on PS5 sometime in 2027.
