Laufey in God of War Could Unravel One of the Series’ Biggest Mysteries
God of War: Laufey is the upcoming installment in Santa Monica Studio’s epic saga, and this time, players will step into the shoes of Kratos’ wife, Faye, rather than the god of war himself. The narrative unfolds alongside the 2018 reboot, as Faye navigates an afterlife filled with deities from various mythologies, striving to assist her husband and their son, Atreus, from beyond the grave. Although we’ve only glimpsed 20 minutes of gameplay and a release date remains under wraps, fans are buzzing with theories that this title might finally unravel a mystery that has lingered in the God of War universe for nearly a decade.
In the 2018 game, there’s a pivotal moment when a horn is blown, summoning Jörmungandr, the colossal World Serpent residing in Midgard’s Lake of Nine. At this time, Kratos is transporting a sick Atreus to Freya’s hut and only hears the distant sound of the horn. The identity of the horn-blower has remained a mystery, even after God of War: Ragnarok seemingly concluded the Norse saga. This has left players questioning the significance of the scene and why it was highlighted if we were never meant to discover who called the serpent and their intentions. However, Laufey may finally provide some answers.
In the initial trailer, Faye awakens in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods. Just before her passing, she set Kratos and Atreus on a quest to scatter her ashes in Jötunheim, but upon arriving in the Everywhen, she suspects that the journey she charted for them might be in jeopardy. While the specifics of her actions remain unclear, she expresses the need to intervene from the other side to protect them from potential danger. It’s possible that Faye was the one who used the horn to summon the serpent, hinting at her involvement while Kratos and Atreus were on their way to Jötunheim.
Cory Barlog, the Head of Creative at Santa Monica, once hinted that the answer to this enigma would eventually be revealed, and many fans have speculated that Faye could be the key player behind the scenes. If Faye’s primary goal in Laufey is to ensure that Kratos and Atreus succeed in their quest, who better to manipulate events from the shadows? We can only hope to uncover the truth when the game launches on PS5.
