Get ready for the summer release of Solo Leveling’s sequel on Crunchyroll!
Remember when the explosive success of Sword Art Online led to a flood of LitRPG knockoffs and a sea of protagonists who looked just like Kirito? Well, it seems Solo Leveling is stirring up a similar trend.
Tomb Raider King (and no, it’s not related to Lara Croft) is an upcoming anime set to hit Crunchyroll on July 6. This series shares some thematic elements, as it’s based on a Korean webtoon about a character who faces betrayal during a dungeon raid, which grants him a unique hidden ability and fuels his quest for vengeance. The first trailer has just been released, showcasing a massive CGI dragon and featuring the catchy opening theme “Showdown” by QWER.
The story centers on Jooheon Suh, an adventurer on a mission to discover God’s tombs, which are dungeons filled with powerful relics. After being betrayed by his former employer, Suh finds himself sent back in time, embarking on a journey for revenge. Equipped with the adventurer’s version of a guidebook, he aims to seize these powerful relics before anyone else can.
The original Tomb Raider King web novel by Sanji Jiksong debuted in November 2016, just a few months after Solo Leveling, and was later adapted into a web comic that wrapped up in 2023. The entire series has been digitally released in English, amassing nearly 10 million views, while a print translation is being published, with the final volume of 16 set to release this October.
The anime adaptation is being produced by Studio EEK and directed by Seung Wook Woo, a seasoned key animator known for his work on series like One Punch Man, Code Geass, and Death Note. Sound direction will be led by Kisuke Koizumi, who has worked on Chainsaw Man and Dororo. The main character Suh will be voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya, known for roles like Reiner in Attack on Titan, while the talented Saori Hayami will voice Holton Irene, the “King of Bankruptcy.”
The immense popularity of Solo Leveling has sparked a wave of announcements for new TV adaptations based on webtoons. Last year, the CEO of a major company revealed plans to create 20 new animated adaptations by 2025, with even more in the pipeline, including adaptations of Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint and Dark Moon: The Blood Altar.
