Helldivers 2 is set for a major visual overhaul in its intergalactic conflict.
Since the launch of Helldivers 2 in 2024, players have banded together to wage a galactic war against a variety of foes, including Automatons (robots), Terminids (bug-like aliens), and the Illuminate (humanoid aliens). The outcome of this conflict hinges on which planets are liberated and which fall to enemy forces.
In a recent update, the game director acknowledged that the team has faced challenges in conveying how community actions influence the game, raising questions about whether it’s all just an illusion. He noted that for newcomers, especially those who didn’t join during major events like the “Battle for Super Earth” or the “Cyberstan Invasion,” understanding the ongoing situation has been tough.
Previously, players received major orders detailing where to go and what to do in support of Super Earth. This system is evolving into galactic war campaigns that will last between one and three weeks. The goal is to ensure players always know the current campaign, its progress, outcomes, and what’s at stake.
Missions are also set for a revamp with the introduction of planet warfronts. The director mentioned that while the idea of dynamic warfronts was appealing, the team initially lacked the necessary content. However, that’s changing; roguelite-inspired mechanics are being integrated into Helldivers 2, categorizing missions as “defend,” “frontline war,” or “behind enemy lines.”
Players will engage in battles to secure key strategic locations on planets, such as cities, which will feature different enemy types in various regions. Additionally, game masters will still play a role in these encounters. The final version of this feature will include gameplay-altering effects and consequences tied to planet liberation goals, such as liberating a city within a set time or disabling enemy artillery to unlock critical operations.
Personal orders are also being revamped to better align with the galactic war’s progression. Players will no longer have to leave their squad to complete specific enemy kill counts. Instead, each galactic war campaign will have an associated “personal campaign progression.” This feature is expected to roll out later this year.
Ship customization is on the horizon, along with the ability to unlock new ships and a complete overhaul of the ship module system. This overhaul aims to enhance player agency and significantly expand progression options. While these changes are still a bit away, more information will be shared later this year.
One of the most talked-about changes, despite its simplicity, is the introduction of assisted reloads, which has received enthusiastic feedback from the community. This feature allows players to use assisted reloads regardless of whether the carrier or the reloaded weapon has the backpack equipped, making these weapons much more practical in gameplay.
There’s a lot more in store for the game this year, including fixes for “stratagem bouncing,” improvements to hellpod steering, and an increase in the level cap to 300, all outlined in the update.
The team is committed to supporting Helldivers 2 for an extended period.
