Cyberdecks Evolve from Laptops to Personalized Devices
DIY enthusiast and TikTok creator Annike Tan, known as @ubeboobey, has crafted a stealthy cyberdeck that blends seamlessly into her surroundings, resembling anything but a computer. Earlier this year, she gained attention for her mermaid-themed cyberdeck housed in an old purse. Since then, she has enhanced her creation, adding an MP3 player and a solar-powered version.
Tan is part of a growing community of DIYers who are racking up millions of views by showcasing their unique personal computers built into purses, jewelry boxes, toys, and repurposed tech, cleverly concealing Raspberry Pi boards within artistic projects.
The vibrant and imaginative designs emerging on social media mark a significant departure from the traditional cyberdeck aesthetic, which typically features a rugged 3D-printed chassis or a sturdy box like a Pelican case, often adorned with cyberpunk elements.
These homemade devices function as mini Linux computers tailored for specific offline tasks, such as reading, journaling, or enjoying music. The beauty of this new trend is that a cyberdeck can take on any form, not necessarily resembling a computer at all.
This movement champions the use of recycled or thrifted materials, embracing the creative aspect of cyberdeck construction. One TikTok user, @diypagancrafts, crafted a cyberdeck from a retro TV-themed purse, featuring a screen on the outside while housing the Raspberry Pi, keyboard, and game controller within. Almost anything with enough room for a single-board computer and a display can serve as a cyberdeck—think Dunkin’ Donuts munchkin boxes, Pokeballs, Altoids tins, or even plastic containers filled with faux moss and flowers.
