Space Invaders Lottery Game Frustrates Players with $100,000 Promise
Picture this: you grab a scratch-off ticket, not really expecting to hit the jackpot, but hey, it’s just $5, and there’s a video game theme to boot. You start scratching off the silver panels, and suddenly, you see it — you’ve won $100,000?!
Your mind races with possibilities. Clear your debts? Make a down payment on a house? Travel the globe? Stock up on video games? Excited, you rush to claim your prize, only to find out that you’ve actually won nothing. It turns out the ticket had a printing mistake. Instead of being lucky, you’re just another player caught in a frustrating twist of fate. This scenario has unfolded for several players in Indiana recently, as reported by various sources.
Earlier this month, a Space Invaders-themed lotto game debuted, featuring the iconic pixelated aliens. The Hoosier Lottery estimated the odds of winning anything at 1 in 3. Just days later, a few players reported wins ranging from $1,500 to $5,000.
The grand prize was supposed to be limited to three tickets, each promising a hefty $100,000 payout. However, by midweek, more than three players were attempting to cash in on those $100,000 tickets. While the tickets were valid, those hopeful winners soon learned that a printing error meant the game was being pulled.
One player, Mike Fields, shared that instead of the promised $100,000, he was offered just $20. After posting about his experience on Reddit, he received encouragement from others to consult a lawyer.
Another player, Tyson Enochs, bought several tickets, one of which appeared to win the $100,000 prize. Overjoyed, he returned to the store and purchased 20 more tickets. “This would’ve been the biggest blessing for me and my family. When I saw that, I thought, oh my god, this is a dream,” Enochs told a local news outlet. He is also considering legal action against the lottery.
The Hoosier Lottery acknowledged a technical issue with the game. “We halted the sales of the ticket to ensure the game experience upholds the integrity we strive to provide,” their Space Invaders page states. They explained that the printing error showed winnings that didn’t match the official records and that an investigation is underway. Players who believe they’ve won are advised to call a hotline, fill out a ‘protest’ form, and send their tickets to the lottery for review.
This isn’t the first time the Hoosier Lottery has faced backlash over a lotto error. In 2022, a different game had all its tickets promising a $5,000 payout. That time, the lottery honored its commitment, paying out $5,000 to winners, costing them $1.7 million. It remains to be seen if they will take similar action this time, especially with the stakes being much higher.
