Superman and Supergirl Share an Adorable and Awkward First Encounter in the DCU
Supergirl may be Superman’s older cousin, but due to her ship from Krypton being stuck in suspended animation, she arrived on Earth long after Clark had already grown up. When they finally meet, Superman is a fully grown man while Kara is still just a girl, having lost her people decades ago. With the DC Universe portraying Kara Zor-El as somewhat of a slacker compared to her cousin, it’s fitting that the upcoming Supergirl movie would showcase their first encounter in a lighthearted manner. A new clip from the film highlights this moment.
In the scene, Superman (David Corenswet) discovers Kara (Milly Alcock) in her pod near the Fortress of Solitude. Despite the language barrier—since Clark doesn’t speak Kryptonian—he makes an effort to communicate with her and her superpowered dog, Krypto. Kara’s lines are subtitled, and as she takes in her surroundings, she curiously asks why Superman is in his underwear. At that moment, while basking in the sun, Clark informs her that her superhero powers are about to activate.
The interaction is charming, and Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, doing his best in a tricky situation, is endearing. I’m eager to see how their dynamic unfolds throughout the film. Alcock had a brief appearance in last year’s Superman, but even in that short time, her antihero essence shone through.
Supergirl is set to hit theaters on June 26, following Kara’s quest to save Krypto, who faces a dire fate in just three days if she can’t intervene. After this, the focus will shift to Clayface, which promises a much darker, body horror theme.
