New Series from Solo Leveling Studio Set to Premiere on Crunchyroll This Fall
The surge in popularity of Korean webtoon adaptations continues, especially following the massive success of Solo Leveling. Recently, it was revealed that Overgeared, a webcomic illustrated by the same studio (Redice) that adapted Solo Leveling from its original webnovel, is set to receive an anime adaptation. This series is slated to premiere on Crunchyroll this October, and the first teaser trailer has already dropped.
Overgeared centers around Shin Youngwoo, also known as Grid, a low-level player in a popular VR game who stumbles upon a powerful item that transforms his luck by granting him new abilities. With the skills of a master blacksmith, he gains the power to forge formidable equipment, which he leverages to chase after fame and fortune.
The announced core staff for the series is quite impressive. Ayako Kouno, who previously directed Sword Art Online: Progressive and worked on episodes for series like Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! and Your Lie in April, will be at the helm. Kenta Ihara, known for his work on Vinland Saga and Death Parade, is handling series composition, while sound direction is in the capable hands of Yoshikazu Iwanami, who has worked on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Baccano!. The music will be composed by Yoshiaki Fujisawa, recognized for his contributions to Revue Starlight: The Movie and Love Live!. Shin will be voiced by Tatsumaru Tachibana, known for his role as Mo-Ri Jin in The God of High School.
However, the studio responsible for animating the series might stir some debate. J.C. Staff, which faced criticism for the production quality of One Punch Man season 3, will be animating Overgeared.
It’s worth mentioning that J.C. Staff has a history of producing well-received series over the years, including classics like Toradora, Food Wars, and the iconic Revolutionary Girl Utena. Since many animators in the industry are freelancers, the involvement of a specific studio doesn’t always dictate the outcome. That said, there is a noticeable trend; for example, A-1 Pictures, which animated Solo Leveling, has been on a roll lately with hits like Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Fate/strange Fake, and Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines!
Another challenge for Overgeared is that it enters a saturated genre, following countless stories of protagonists who start off weak until they discover a special item or ability that turns them into formidable players. While this premise may not inspire overwhelming confidence, we’ll see if the series can rise above the clichés when it debuts this fall.
