Unlocking Lockpicking: A Guide to Acquiring Lockpicks in Gothic Remake
I haven’t encountered a lockpicking minigame as punishing as the one in Gothic Remake, especially when you’re just starting out. It’s probably akin to handing you a lockpick and asking you to open a locked chest in real life—unless you happen to be a master thief, of course.
Fortunately, like many aspects of Gothic, it gets much easier once you invest in some training and stock up on lockpicks for your attempts at cracking open containers and snagging loot. Here’s a quick guide on the basics of lockpicking, tips to simplify the process, and where to find more picks.
Gothic features some of the toughest lockpicking challenges I’ve faced in an RPG, particularly when dealing with intricate locks that have six sliders. You can see an example of this during the Cult’s Recipe quest. Here’s a brief overview of how it works:
If you’re serious about mastering lockpicking, seek out training as soon as you can. During the Casting Shadows quest for Diego, you can inquire about instructors, and he’ll point you to Fingers in the Old Camp.
To find Fingers, head left from the castle entrance, past Snaf and his cauldron, and look for his shack up the slope to your right. He’ll train you in lockpicking, but you’ll need to have some ore nuggets and learning points from leveling up.
For gathering lockpicks, your best options are to explore the world and keep an eye out for them, especially in areas populated by prisoners, or to purchase them from Mordrag in the Old Camp. You can find him sitting on a bench outside a shack on the east side of the cloth-covered market area in the southern part of the camp.
He sells lockpicks for 13 ore each, which is quite pricey, so it’s often better to find them while exploring and save your picks for when you’re actually trying to unlock something. You can also buy them from Dexter in the same market area, who is the merchant associated with the Cult’s Recipe quest.
