TMNT: The Last Ronin Game Returns with a New Studio and Ambitious Vision

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is back in the spotlight. During the Summer Game Fest showcase, it was revealed that PlatinumGames, the studio behind titles like Bayonetta and Nier: Automata, has taken over development of this long-awaited action-adventure game, which was first announced over three years ago.

The latest teaser for The Last Ronin offers a brief glimpse into a dark, futuristic New York, accompanied by the tagline “When all that remains is vengeance.” While details remain scarce, this re-reveal signals renewed life for the project, which was initially introduced in 2023 as a AAA, third-person action RPG reminiscent of 2018’s God of War. However, the original version was ultimately scrapped, as shared by Paramount Games Studio’s head of creative and production, who noted that Platinum’s fresh approach is inspired by the beloved graphic novel.

The game draws from the 2020 comic series penned by Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, focusing on the last surviving Ninja Turtle, whose identity is shrouded in mystery throughout much of the narrative. This lone hero dons a black mask and wields the team’s signature weapons—nunchaku, sai, bo staff, and dual katanas—on a quest for revenge against the Foot Clan. Given the source material’s tone, the game is likely aimed at a more mature audience.

The head of Paramount Games expressed confidence in Platinum, stating that their expertise in action games makes them the perfect fit for this franchise. He emphasized that the studio’s pitch exceeded expectations, highlighting a blend of intense combat and a deep emotional narrative. The director, Yohei Shimbori, approached the project with a personal touch, aiming to resonate with both longtime fans and a new generation, emphasizing the desire to create a better world for future fans.

Shimbori’s background in fighting games, combined with the creative team’s passion, led to a collaborative effort that aims to deliver a game that everyone involved would want to play. The goal is to elevate The Last Ronin to a “prestige level,” drawing inspiration from titles like Metal Gear Rising, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of War. The team is focused on merging Japanese-style combat with Western storytelling while staying true to the TMNT’s New York roots.

The head of creative and production has a rich history in storytelling, having contributed to acclaimed narratives in games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice. He is now directly involved in crafting the story for The Last Ronin, collaborating closely with Shimbori and a narrative director to ensure a seamless integration of gameplay and story, aiming for a level of quality that stands alongside the best in their careers.

TMNT: The Last Ronin is set to launch on consoles and PC, though a release date has yet to be announced.
