New Game “gen Atlas” Unveiled by the Creators of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus

The creative team behind iconic action-adventure titles like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian has unveiled their latest project at Summer Game Fest: gen Atlas. This single-player, open-world action-adventure game takes place on a deserted planet.

gen Atlas marks the first full release from GenDesign, the studio established by Fumito Ueda after his departure from Sony and Team Ico in 2011, during the development of The Last Guardian. Initially teased as Project Robot, the game was first showcased with a moody two-minute trailer at The Game Awards 2024. Hints about the project date back to 2020, when GenDesign partnered with Epic Games for its publication.

In a recent announcement, GenDesign shared intriguing details about the game’s premise: “Without knowing why, you awaken on an abandoned planet,” they explained. Players will explore a vast, silent world filled with colossal structures, deserted facilities, and a dynamic sea, all remnants of a once-grand design scattered across the landscape.

“As you journey deeper into this strange world, a colossal robot awaits. Its immense power unlocks paths to previously unreachable areas, reshaping your understanding of the environment. Over the course of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to stir once again…”

Fumito Ueda, CEO and creative director of GenDesign, expressed that with gen Atlas, “We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.”

While a release date has yet to be announced, gen Atlas is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via the Epic Games Store), and Xbox Series X.
