Gen Atlas: Fumito Ueda’s Project Robot Gets a New Name

Fumito Ueda, the visionary behind Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, made a return at Summer Game Fest to unveil his long-teased Project Robot, now officially titled Gen Atlas. The brief glimpse of in-game footage was nothing short of stunning, showcasing a vast, decaying robot landscape.

During the event, Ueda made a silent appearance from the audience, and when the Gen Atlas footage played, it drew audible gasps from attendees.

True to Ueda’s style, the game centers around a small character navigating an asymmetrical relationship with a much larger one, this time featuring two robots of differing sizes. The footage reveals a floating head that eventually connects with a collapsed body, which rises to meet it. Meanwhile, a smaller robot, showing signs of wear, engages in combat against waves of alien foes, delivering an unexpected burst of action from a creator known for his more contemplative gameplay.

The gameplay features running, jetpacks, epic battles against colossal robots, and fast-moving tanks, all set against a backdrop that instantly evokes nostalgia for the PS2 classic Ico. This marks an intriguing shift for Ueda and his team, while still retaining many of his signature elements.

Details remain sparse, particularly regarding a release date or when we might receive more information. However, this could signal the start of exciting developments ahead.
