Monster Hunter Wilds’ first expansion revives iconic Elder Dragons.

Capcom unveiled the first major expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds during Summer Game Fest 2026, over a year after the game’s initial release. Titled Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, this expansion is set to launch sometime in 2027. While details were sparse, the studio hinted that it would be comparable in size to the “Iceborne” expansion.

Ascendance draws heavily from the aesthetics of Monster Hunter 4. Players will soar above the clouds to explore a series of floating islands, reminiscent of the Heaven’s Mount region from Monster Hunter 4. Among the elder dragons making a return is Kushala Daora, a fan-favorite from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, though it’s worth noting that Kushala Daora also appeared in earlier titles like MonHun 2 and Freedom Unite. Another notable addition is Lao-Shan Lung, an elder dragon that hasn’t been featured in the mainline series since Generations Ultimate and previously in Freedom Unite. The trailer also hinted at a new feature for the bowgun and showcased some impressive new moves.

Wilds has faced its share of challenges. After a strong launch that saw nearly 10 million copies sold, it encountered significant criticism for its streamlined hunts and ongoing performance issues on PC.

With 2027 on the horizon, it looks to be another exciting year for Capcom. During the same Summer Game Fest, the studio also announced Resident Evil Veronica, an ambitious remake of the 2000 classic Code Veronica, also set for release in 2027.

The throwback I didn’t know I needed.
