After 16 years, the spiritual successor to Assassin’s Creed embraces a world of witchcraft.

Patrice Désilets, the mastermind behind Assassin’s Creed, has dedicated 16 years to crafting his latest venture. He finally unveiled it at Summer Game Fest 2026, introducing a dark fantasy steeped in witchcraft titled 1666: Amsterdam. Following the event, a brief prologue demo is now available for free on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with plans for an early access launch later in 2026.

Here’s the official description from the game’s Steam page:

“Explore a meticulously crafted Amsterdam by day. At night, delve into the secrets lurking beneath its surface. Every facade hides a gablestone, but not all reveal the truth. The Originals blend in with Amsterdam’s citizens, concealed behind human appearances. Identify them. Mark them. When the Esbat arrives, confront them in their true forms under the moonlight. Collect what is owed. Noa wields witchcraft and spellcasting passed down through generations of Zaindaris. Each target can be approached in various ways. Strategy, timing, and choices shape the outcome. Every Esbat is a reckoning. Noa is not alone.

Aaron, summoned from 1999, now perceives the world through feline eyes. Together, they form a single entity: switch between Noa and Aaron, each offering radically different playstyles. One commands witchcraft, while the other has agility and flair. Experience the opening chapter of 1666: Amsterdam. Join Noa in her Commencement. Witness the cycle spanning centuries. Choose the companion who will accompany her.”

Désilets was initially developing 1666: Amsterdam with THQ Montreal in 2013 when Ubisoft acquired the studio and let him go. This project marks the debut of his new studio, Panache Digital Games.
