A Fan-Favorite Final Fantasy 7 Character Is Being Completely Reimagined for Street Fighter 6

Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII is set to join the roster of Street Fighter 6 as a guest character. This iconic martial artist will be part of the fighting game’s year 4 lineup, bringing with her a unique magic system that enhances her combat abilities.

“Tifa is a character loved by players all around the world,” said the director of Final Fantasy VII, Naoki Hamaguchi, during her reveal at the Summer Game Fest. “That’s exactly why we wanted to create a version of Tifa that truly fits within the world of Street Fighter 6.”

Takayuki Nakayama, the director of the fighting game, mentioned that Tifa will come equipped with her Materia powers, which have been reimagined into a new gameplay system. “Everything from her design to her movement has been completely reworked to present Tifa as a Street Fighter,” he explained.

A teaser for her reveal has been released, though it doesn’t showcase Tifa’s character model or her in-action visuals. Those details will be unveiled at a later date, according to Nakayama.

The expansion of Street Fighter 6’s year 4 roster will kick off this summer. Alongside Tifa, players can expect to see World Tour protagonist Bosch, as well as two entirely new fighters: Yasmine and Arjun. Yasmine is set to debut on August 3, followed by Arjun in the fall, Tifa in early 2027, and Bosch later that spring.

This isn’t Tifa’s first foray into the fighting game genre. Back in the PS1 era, she and Cloud appeared in Ehrgeiz. Since then, Cloud has made his mark in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, while Noctis from Final Fantasy XV and Clive from Final Fantasy XVI have both been featured in the Tekken series. In fact, fans of Tekken 8 have long been advocating for Tifa to join the Bandai Namco fighter.

“We all know she is attractive, and I understand that,” said Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada back in 2024. “But as of now, we have not made any decisions regarding guest characters.” He has since moved on to establish his own studio. Following today’s announcement, one Tekken fan humorously remarked on a subreddit, “Harada quit Tekken because he couldn’t get Tifa.”
